The Hanseatic Hydrogen Center for Aviation and Maritime (H2AM) aims to establish testing capacities for the development of hydrogen and fuel cell–based propulsion applications for aircraft and ships at its Northern German locations in Bremen/Bremerhaven, Hamburg, and Stade. The center also facilitates associated research and development activities in these fields.
H2AM evolved from the working title of the Innovation and Technology Center for Hydrogen Technologies (ITZ) and represents an initiative launched in June 2020 as part of the Northern German Hydrogen Strategy, initiated by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV).
In Bremerhaven, the H2-3D Test Facility (also known as the Wave Simulation Platform) is being developed to provide infrastructure for testing hydrogen components and complete systems suitable for maritime applications in a three-dimensional environment.
The H2-3D Test Facility, together with the specialized expertise of ttz Bremerhaven, is designed to support companies active in the shipbuilding sector—particularly suppliers—in the development, testing, and validation of hydrogen and fuel cell–based components and propulsion systems for seagoing vessels. The testing infrastructure is especially intended for use by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as start-ups in Germany within the framework of research and development projects. It aims to help them bring innovative ideas and technologies to the international market and thereby contribute to Germany’s technological leadership in the hydrogen sector.
